Care of your jewelry

The shine of gold, lustre of pearls, and the sparkle in diamonds are largely dependent on you!  Here are a few suggestions for taking care of your special jewelry:

  • Store in a clean, dry place

  • Keep your jewelry in a fabric lined jewelry case, or in a box with compartments and dividers.

  • Pieces can scratch each other so keep your pieces separated.

  • Be careful to not leave jewelry on the edge of the sink where it can slip down the drain.

  • See a local jeweler at least once a year to have your jewelry checked for loose prongs or worn mountings.  Pearls should be restrung periodically.

  • Many items should not be cleaned in ultrasonic cleaners.  Check with us or a local jeweler about your specific piece before buying/using an ultrasonic cleaner.

  • Do not wear jewelry when doing rough work.  Diamonds are very hard but brittle and can be chipped by a sharp blow.  Pearls can be scratched.

  • Chlorine can discolor the mounting for your diamond jewelry.  Keep your jewelry away from chlorine bleach and other household chemicals.  You should also remove your diamond jewelry before entering a chlorinated pool or hot tub.

  • Pearls will mottle and discolor when in contact with many substances, such as hairspray or cologne.  They they should be the last item you put on and the first item you take off!
  • Clean your jewelry regularly.

    • Diamond jewelry use 1-2 cap fulls of ammonia and a few drops of dish soap to 1 cup of hot water

    • Soak jewelry and brush lightly with a toothbrush

    • Rinse.  Dry with tissue paper
